Police give cabbies a 'park and eat' present
SHANGHAI taxi drivers have just been given another 176 free parking spaces close to their favorite eating places as traffic police try to make life easier for the city's 100,000 cabbies.
Traffic police said yesterday that 11 areas in Xuhui, Changning, Hongkou, Zhabei, Putuo, Jing'an and Baoshan districts now have free-parking for taxi drivers signs in small streets next to popular restaurants.
In 2004 traffic police set aside 48 similar parking sites for taxi drivers.
"There are many popular dining spots for cabbies. They are famous among the drivers because the food is good, quick and reasonably priced. But we still fear we could be fined by the police for parking on the street during a meal," said one taxi driver from Dazhong Taxi Co.
But now police have authorized free parking at the designated spots, the drivers feel more relaxed at lunch and dinner.
"We have picked these 11 spots for cabbies because they create the least disturbance for nearby residents and traffic on main roads," Sun Guofu, a traffic police officer explained.
Cabbies can enjoy free parking in these areas from 11:30am to 1:30pm and from 7:30pm to 9:30pm.
"Eating is always a headache for cabbies, especially lunch. Now we have more places where we can eat dinner without fearing a hefty 200-yuan fine for illegal parking," said a driver surnamed Ma from Dazhong Taxi Co yesterday while eating his lunch on Lingling Road.
A noodle store owner, surnamed Sun, told Shanghai Daily the free-parking signs were placed outside her shop on Monday on Xinfeng Road. She said the cafes around her attracted floods of cabbies every day as the food is fast and cheap.
However, despite the warning signs, a Shanghai Daily reporter still found other cars parking among the taxis.
