Police seize 89 fake car plates in crackdown

POLICE have seized 89 counterfeit car plates since launching a campaign in late April.

Police said some drivers use a fake plate featuring the same number as a genuine one to avoid being punished after violating traffic laws, leaving the genuine plate owners taking the blame.

Officers tell victims to take pictures of their vehicles or video clips of their driving mileage records to enable them to clear their names. Any fine paid will be reimbursed after police confirm a duplicate plate has been used.

Traffic police said it is a fairly common trick and the fake plates are usually bought at illegal markets. In one recent case, an owner of a Bentley from Zhejiang Province found his car had several traffic violations recorded in Shanghai last month and called the police.

Shanghai police seized the suspect early this month in Putuo District. His car was confiscated.

In a well-known incident exposed online earlier this year, a local resident parked his car in an downtown underground garage. He found another car parked next to his with the identical plate number. The car with the fake plate was even the same model. The case, however, went no where despite police efforts to locate the owner of the car with the fake plate.
