Police to monitor 2,000 cameras
JING’AN traffic police get access to over 2,000 surveillance cameras in public areas to catch more law-breaking drivers, said officials.
From a command center, the first of its kind in the city, traffic police officers will monitor 28 screens connected to the cameras and notify their colleagues when they spot traffic offenses, accidents or unusual congestion.
These cameras watching over public areas were previously used by police to solve crimes.
“This new project enables us to help officers on the street work more efficiently,” said Cang Dingjun, a Jing’an traffic police official.
Police said they currently look at about 70 cameras installed on streets or at crossroads where traffic offenses are common once every 30 minutes, and others every one or two hours.
Meanwhile, Jing’an traffic police has developed a new surveillance camera that can identify multiple types of traffic offenses and record the plate numbers of the vehicles used to commit them.
