Porter firm suspended for tricking bus passengers

A PORTER company at a major city long-distance bus station was suspended from business and six of its porters sacked after they were found leading passengers to unauthorized bus operators.

The company also was required to eliminate unqualified workers, according to the managers of Shanghai South Long-Distance Bus Station. The station is city's major bus hub to southern China.

The company, Shangnan Red Cap Co, can restart the business on January 26 when this year's Spring Festival rush begins.

An official at Red Cap, known for the staff uniform of a red cap and red vest, said they will "learn the lesson."

The scandal came to light on Wednesday after local TV news reporters who pretended to be passengers were led by a porter to a bus ticket booth outside the station.

The bus operator, suspected of not having a proper license, gave the reporters a written paper to serve as a ticket before boarding.

One porter said they would "make more than 2,000 yuan extra" during busy times.
