Power cut derails Metro service
MORE than 500 Metro passengers had to be led to safety yesterday after an electrical fault caused a Line 2 train to become stranded inside a tunnel.
The incident happened about 11:30am when the pantograph atop the train malfunctioned as it was approaching Jinke Road station, operator Shanghai Shentong Metro Group said.
Though no one was injured, sparks and smoke were seen coming from outside the train as parts of the pantograph fell to the ground, the company said.
It is not clear what caused the malfunction, but an investigation has been launched, it said.
The train’s 560 passengers were guided to safety by police and fire officers, and were able to exit the tunnel at Zhangjiang High Technology Park station.
Technicians worked to remove the faulty pantograph and the train was freed about 4:30pm, five hours after coming to a halt.
Normal service on Line 2 was resumed about an hour later.
In the interim, westbound travelers were forced to get off at Shanghai Science and Technology Museum where a fleet of shuttle buses was on hand to take them to Longyang Road and Guanglan Road stations.
Police officers and subway staff helped to maintain order and guide people on their way.
Anyone who was inconvenienced by the breakdown is entitled to a full refund on their ticket, which they should claim within seven days at any Metro station, the operator said.
