Price of yellow peaches soars

THE city’s annual yellow peach crop is expected to hit the market by next Wednesday, but consumers can expect to pay about 15 percent more than last year due to the impact of bad weather on production, officials said yesterday.

“Low temperatures at the beginning of the year and too much rain have resulted in a production decline,” said Zhang Ruiming, vice director of Shanghai Agricultural Technology Promotion and Service Center.

According to a previous report, the production of yellow peaches, one of the four most popular home-grown fruits in Shanghai, fell by as much as 80 percent over last. The production of honey peaches, which are no longer on the market, fell by about 50 percent this year.

“Grapes also experienced a decline in production, but the peaches suffered the most,” Zhang said. This was confirmed by local grower Cai Lingming, head of the Minchuan Fruit and Vegetable Cooperative, which grows peaches on 165 mu, or 11 hectares of land.

“The yield for each mu should be 4 to 5 kilograms, but the low temperatures reduced the yield to 2 kilograms,” Cai said. “And we lost a lot of them due to excessive rain.”

“The wholesale price used to be between 4 (US$0.6) to 5 yuan per 500 grams, but this year it is 7 to 8 yuan,” Cai added.

But it hasn’t been a bad year for all fruit producers. The city has seen a surge in the production of pears and oranges.

“This year is a big one for oranges, and the fruit will be sweeter this year,” Zhang said.

A summer exhibition featuring locally grown fruit will be held from tomorrow to Sunday at the Shanghai Agricultural Exhibition Hall.
