Protest at cruise ship route changes
THREE cruise ships docked in Shanghai at the weekend were forced to change their routes due to Typhoon Goni.
These ships, including Quantum of the Seas and Sapphire Princess were originally scheduled to head to Japanese cities, but now will stop at cities in South Korea instead.
The change of routes led to a compensation dispute, with some passengers refusing to board Quantum of the Seas yesterday and demanding a full refund and compensation. Angry passengers said they had wanted to go to Japan not South Korea.
Japanese cities visited by cruise ships include Tokyo, Hiroshima, Kobe and Nagasaki.
Cruise company Royal Caribbean International promised them vouchers for future voyages and for using on the ship when announcing the change of route on Saturday.
For those who don’t want to embark the trip, it said it would return port tax and provide vouchers for future voyages, Royal Caribbean International added.
The company said it is very common to change routes in cruises due to weather conditions. Under such conditions, cruise companies and travel agencies don’t provide compensation as they haven’t broken their contract.
Passengers were persuaded to board the ship in the end, said officials. Typhoon Goni is expected to make landfall on Japan’s Kyushu island tomorrow.
