Pudong airport warns: allow extra time
PUDONG airport is expected to receive a record of 200,000 passengers daily during the National Day holiday, mainly travelers to China’s scenic areas and Southeast Asian countries, the airport authority said yesterday.
About 1,300 domestic and international flights a day will take off or land at the airport on average during the weeklong holiday that starts with National Day tomorrow, compared with the usual average of 800 flights.
The peak periods for outbound passengers will be today and tomorrow, while the peak days for travelers returning to the city will be from Wednesday to next Friday, Shanghai Airport Authority said.
The authority has increased the numbers of security staff at the airport, and will open all the security channels to cut the waiting time for passengers.
However, passengers are advised to give themselves more time to clear security checks during the holiday to avoid missing their flights.
The airport authority has introduced new anti-terrorism checks at the city’s two airports. Passengers are being checked for any explosive residue and luggage will have to pass through X-ray machines at the entrances of terminal buildings.
Passengers are reminded not to bring any prohibited objects such as knives or guns as well as flammable and explosive materials. The authority said passengers should allow an extra 30 minutes for the additional checks.
Pudong airport has also installed 12 self-service luggage check-in machines in a trial operation aimed at cutting waiting times for passengers. China Eastern, Spring and Juneyao airlines offer such services at the airport.
Terminal 1’s busiest periods are expected to be between 7:30 and 11:30am, and 7-9:30pm, while the peak hours for T2 will be 6:30-8:30am and 9-11pm.
Parking bays at the Pudong are expected to be very busy during peak periods, especially at P1 and P2, and travelers are advised to use the P4 parking area, from where they can take a free shuttle bus to the terminal building.
