Pudong government apologizes over entrapment

PUDONG New Area government made a public apology for entrapping a company driver and accusing him of operating an illegal taxi, according to Xinhua news agency today.

Sun Zhongjie was forced by so-called traffic officers to admit that he was operating an illegal cab on October 14. Sun said he had only acted out of kindness in helping a young man who begged him for a ride.

His case attracted nationwide media attention when Sun became so angry that he cut off a piece of his finger to prove his innocence, the report said.

Today's about-turn by the city government contradicted its earlier findings on October 20 that cleared transport supervisors of any mishandling in Sun's case.

The government today said its previous investigation was premature and had compromised the image of Shanghai and Pudong.

Sun's lawyer Hao Jinsong said in his blog today that Sun will claim compensation from the Pudong transport supervisor for his finger and mental distress. Hao also threatened to sue the traffic unit for fraud if the charges weren't dropped.
