Racetrack apartments get soundproofing

SOUNDPROOF windows are being installed in the former Shanghai Race Course apartment complex to cut down noise.

Residents in the old eight-story complex in Shanghai's downtown area have been troubled by traffic noise from the nearby Yan'an elevated expressway for more than 10 years, Shanghai Evening News reported today.

The horse-shoe like complex was built to house jockeys by Shanghai Jockey Club in 1936 to the south of the old racetrack, now the site of People's Square and People's Park.

It was almost demolished in 1995 to allow for the proposed Yan'an elevated road. But Shanghai government accepted residents' petitions to preserve it as historic architecture and changed the route of the highway.

Residents complained to authorities about traffic noise pollution after the highway opened in November 1997 but lack of funds prevented any action being taken.

Huangpu District's urban management department agreed to install double-glazed windows during recent renovation and beautification work undertaken along Yan'an Road for Shanghai World Expo 2010.
