Rain soaks city, floods 10 streets
A THUNDERSTORM dumped heavy rain across the city yesterday, flooding 10 streets in Minhang and Baoshan districts.
The Shanghai flood control headquarters said the rainfall averaged 50 millimeters across the city with a peak of 74mm falling in Zhaotun, Qingpu District.
Rainfall at the World Expo site ranged from 34 to 40mm. No flooding was reported.
Yesterday morning the bureau issued an orange rainstorm alert, the second highest on the three-scale system, for the first time this summer.
The alert was downgraded to yellow in the afternoon.
A yellow wind alert, the third lowest on a four-scale system, and a yellow thunder alert, the second highest on the three-level system, were raised at 4pm.
More than 1,200 flood prevention workers patrolled streets.
A rainstorm on Saturday afternoon caused flooding on streets and in residential buildings.
More than 60 homes were flooded in Yangpu District, with water reaching 5 to 10 centimeters deep.
About 10 roads were flooded with water 10 to 20cm deep.
In Putuo District, traffic was suspended at one intersection where the water reached 30cm deep.
Meanwhile, electricity officials said that the peak power demand of the East China power grid will reach 162 million kilowatts, increasing 13 percent this summer compared to last.
Power demand will increase 100 kilowatts when the temperature rises 1 degree Celsius, officials said.
At 10:30am on Friday, power demand in the east China region reached 150 million kilowatts.
Another rainstorm is possible today, when the high will be 30 degrees, the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau said yesterday.
The temperature will rise to 33 degrees tomorrow and continue rising throughout the week to a peak of 36 degrees, forecasters said.
There is a chance of thunderstorms on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.
