Rains bringing some relief, but it will still be hot

THE city will see some relief from the sweltering heat thanks to upcoming rain, but temperatures will still be high, forecasters said yesterday.
Today’s maximum is forecast at 37 degrees Celsius.
Tomorrow will see drizzles across the city and highs are expected to hover around 35 degrees over the weekend.
Rain is forecast to continue next week under the influence of typhoon Nesat, the ninth this year.
Monday’s high should drop below 35 for the first time since July 11 and is forecast to fall to 32 on Tuesday, the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau said.
If the temperature reaches 37 today, it will set a record for the number of consecutive “scorching days” — 37 degrees or above. Yesterday’s maximum of 37.8 equaled the record of 10 set in 1934 and 2013.
The latest hot spell lasted 17 days and saw the mercury hit 40.9 degrees last Friday — the hottest day on record.
“Also, Shanghai has been put on orange alert (or above) for 16 consecutive days, which would set a record in the 145-year history of data,” said Fu Yi, a chief service officer at the bureau said yesterday.
As the mercury falls, ozone levels also decrease. Air quality was perfect yesterday and is expected to remain fine until Sunday, the city’s environmental protection agency said.
The Meteorological Bureau is also conducting a pilot scheme for precision forecasting down to within 1 square kilometer.
The service would allow users to simply type a location and direction and then be told something like: “Based on your speed, you will arrive Xujiahui in 20 minutes, when the area will be hit by a 30-minute shower.”
But it is not yet known if it will be released to the public.
