Rains lash city, temperature dips

THOSE hoping for sunny days may have to wait longer. Thunder, lightning and rain were back last night with forecasters predicting wet days ahead.
A cold front arrived yesterday, triggering a yellow alert for lightning, the first of the year, and by 8pm heavy downpour had lashed the city.
Precipitation reached 15 to 30 millimeters in some districts within three hours along with gale. Jiading and Minhang districts witnessed hail.
The yellow lightning alert was lifted at 11:20pm.
The temperature will hover around 11 degrees Celsius today but the wet days will remain until Thursday. The Shanghai Meteorological Bureau said that high pressure will take hold on the city on Friday, bringing with it sunny days.
A yellow alert for fog, the lowest scale of the three-color system, was announced late on Saturday and lifted at 7:52am yesterday. The temperature climbed to 23.5 degrees, the hottest March 4 in over 86 years.
Today is jingzhe, the third of the 24 Chinese solar terms, that usually leads to warmer days. Meteorologically, it requires five consecutive days with average temperatures above 10 degrees for spring to officially begin.
