Rainstorm dispels sweltering heat
Torrential rains pelted the city this noon accompanied by lightning and thunder. The heat that gathered since daybreak diminished noticeably.
The thunderstorm started about 11am, did not last long in the downtown area, but brought a lot of coolness to the city, said the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau.
The maximum temperature in downtown Xujiahui area was only 26.2 degrees Celsius at 1:15pm, compared with 33 degrees in the morning.
Precipitation in Baoshan District reached 69.5 millimeters, more than other parts of the city. No serious flooding has been reported.
The bureau said showers in Baoshan, Pudong and Minhang districts could dump 50 millimeters of rain water in three hours.
The bureau issued an orange rainstorm alert, second highest of a four-level warning system, and a yellow lightning alert at 11:31am.
