Rainy season forecast to begin today

THIS year’s plum rain season is expected to begin today with cold and warm air masses meeting more frequently over the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River, the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau said yesterday.

The plum rain season usually lasts about 20 days and occurs most often in June and early July.

Rain is expected today through Thursday.

The temperature will range between 23 and 27 degrees Celsius today, the bureau forecast. There’s a chance of a thunderstorm tomorrow and Wednesday with the mercury fluctuating between 22 and 25 degrees, it said.

The sky is forecast to clear up late on Thursday.

The high will bounce back to 28 degrees on Friday under cloudy skies and the long-range forecast calls for a dry weekend for the Dragon Boat Festival.

Fu Yi, a chief service officer at the weather bureau said the fickle plum rain season varies from year to year.

“The rainy season averages 23 days,” he said. “But some years there isn’t a plum rain season. The city’s longest recorded rainy season lasted 58 days in 1954.”

The bureau also reminded residents not to leave food out for too long as the humidity in summer means dishes can spoil quicker, which can lead to bacterial food poisoning.
