Record high gives way to cloud, showers
SHANGHAI basked in record mid-October temperatures yesterday, with over 31 degrees Celsius recorded in suburban areas.
However, the mercury is forecast to be pushed down by rain and the arrival of a cold front today.
With high pressure dominating the city weather yesterday, the benchmark Xujiahui weather station recorded a high of 29 degrees, while in suburban Songjiang, Baoshan and Jiading districts highs topped 30 degrees.
And a weather station in Luodian County in Baoshan recorded 31.6 degrees at 12:40pm.
But the still weather also prevented pollutants from dispersing.
Yesterday’s air quality was marked lightly polluted with the air quality index peaking at 115 at 7pm, according to the Shanghai Environmental Monitoring Center. Meanwhile, the concentration of main pollutant PM2.5 particles climbed to 87.1 micrograms per cubic meter — more than 10 micrograms higher than the safety standard of 75.
Light smog is expected this morning and showers are forecast through the day. Temperatures will range between 20 and 26 degrees.
Temperatures between Wednesday and Saturday are set to range from 16 to 23 degrees, forecasters said.
