Redesigned station gets approval of Metro users

THE crowds of commuters were as big as ever yesterday morning at Caohejing Hi-tech Park subway station on Line 9, but thanks to a recent renovation program they appeared to be moving much more smoothly.

“The station hall and platforms used to be really congested,” a commuter surnamed Wang told Shanghai Daily.

“But there are no problems now,” he said.

Wang’s comments were music to the ears of station boss Dai Jing, who said the three-week program of upgrades had been designed to cut the transit time within the station from four minutes to two.

“The interval between trains is about three minutes, but it used to take people four minutes to get out,” he said, while watching people trying to navigate the new layout for the first time yesterday.

The keys to improving passenger flow were the installation of three new staircases and rejigging the turnstiles, he said.

“People thought we’d moved the exits, but they’re still in the same place. We just shifted the turnstiles,” he said.

Nonetheless, several commuters were spotted scratching their heads and making U-turns as they tried to come to terms with the new design.

“I feel a little lost,” said Chen Liang, who works at the nearby Caohejing Hi-tech Park.

“I never remember the exit number, I just know my way through the station and that’s changed,” he said.

Despite his initial confusion, Chen was delayed only for a few moments and was soon back on the right path.

“We put up posters explaining the changes and volunteers will be on hand all week to help anyone who gets lost,” Dai said.
