Regulation plans for driver hire
SHANGHAI plans to bring together its 160 or so car rental and driver hire companies under the umbrella of a committee to create regulations for the industry.
The Shanghai Road Transportation Trade Association says it will establish a driving service committee by the end of the year.
Companies and agencies that provide driver hiring services or car rentals will be encouraged to join.
Among those who use driver hiring services are drivers who drink at functions and require someone to take them and their vehicle home, and older and new drivers needing support.
However, the industry has never been regulated, which can lead to safety risks.
According to Zhang Liwei, deputy chief of Shanghai Road Transportation Trade Association, the new committee will first work on draft regulations.
Driver requirements may include more than five years’ experience, said officials.
