Relief from heat feels good but will not last long

SHANGHAI will get some temporary relief from the heat as the forecast calls for a high of 31 degrees Celsius today.

It will be cloudy with a chance of a thunderstorm today. More of the same is expected tomorrow although the high will climb to 34 degrees.

Yesterday's thunderstorms brought the temperature down from a peak of 36.2 degrees around 1pm to about 28 degrees by 5pm, according to the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau.

For many, the cooler weather was a relief after four straight days in which the mercury reached at least 35 degrees.

"The rain should last on Saturday and there is a chance of a big storm in the morning," said Zhu Jiehua, a chief service officer of the bureau.

However, Zhu said the temperature should climb above 35 degrees on Monday.
