Renovation of Xujiahui area nearing completion
THE renovation of roads and buildings in the Xujiahui area and the remodeling of its shopping malls will be finished at the end of March, officials said yesterday.
All the construction sites, including Metro exits and road-widening projects in the area and near Changshu Road, will be ready in March and be decorated with flowers before the World Expo opens on May 1, Chen Yin, director of Xuhui District, told a news conference yesterday.
Two main roads near Xujiahui - Wanping Road and Dong'an Road - are expected to open to traffic before the Spring Festival which begins on February 14, Chen said.
A total 209 roads had been renovated last year and the construction of Xujiahui Station of Metro Line 9 was also completed then.
Markets have also been upgraded. Metro City, a shopping and entertainment venue in Xujiahui, has turned the ground floor into a market selling Japanese products. And the Grand Gateway has introduced more top brands and improved its catering services.
Metro station venting outlets, which had been a source of annoyance for people walking in the street, had been removed to the tops of nearby buildings, Chen said.
People in the area can now enjoy a tourism route to visit Chongsi Building in Xuhui Middle School, built in 1917, which has been newly renovated, Xujiahui Cathedral, also known as St Ignatius Cathedral, and Guangqi Park, named after Chinese mathematician Xu Guangqi, a 16th-century Shanghai native, from this spring, Chen said.
The Tushanwan Museum where the Tushanwan Archway is preserved will open to public before the Expo, Chen said.
The 100-year-old archway, which had been exhibited at three Expos and returned to Shanghai in 2009, will be on public view.
