Reservoir water for more homes; tallest tower on schedule

Another 1.26 million residents in Pudong, Shanghai will be supplied with better-tasting water from the Qingcaosha Reservoir on the city's Chongming Island this September when water pipes extend to their homes, the project constructor said today.

Chengtou Group, the state-owned construction company of the city, said the installation of water pipes in the southern part of Pudong is to be finished by September. The reservoir project has benefitted 11 million people, most in downtown districts and part of Pudong.

When the last phase of the reservoir project is completed, residents in southern Pudong will bid adieu to poor-quality water sourced locally.

Also at today's news briefing, Chengtou Group said China's tallest building under construction will reach the height of 400 meters by end of this year. The construction of Shanghai Tower is progressing on schedule despite a controversy over some cracks in road surface around the area which has a high density of skyscrapers.

Chengtou said the 128-story tower will rise to the 86th floor by end of this year. It will soar to 630 meters when it is completed.
