Restrictions stay on air link Metro

METRO passengers have been told they must accept delays getting onto the platform at Line 2’s Guanglan Road Station, the transit station for services to Pudong International Airport.

Operator Shanghai Shentong Metro Group said rush-hour restrictions introduced this week for safety reasons will continue, despite complaints from passengers.

Restrictions began on Wednesday, with just four of the station’s eight entrance gates open between 7:30am and 9am.

Queues of passengers formed 20 meters long in front of barriers, with some complaining that it took up to 20 minutes to get through.

“The restrictions have made morning rush hour more difficult,” said passenger Li Sikao. “It took me 20 minutes to reach the platform.”

Shanghai Shentong said five gates were opened yesterday, reportedly reducing the wait to around 10 to 15 minutes.

It said restrictions had reduced the flow of passengers onto the platform as before it had been too crowded during the morning rush hour, creating safety concerns.

Guanglan Road is the transit station for Line 2 passengers heading to and from the Pudong airport.

While still traveling on the same line, they change trains at Guanglan Road, moving en masse to the other side of the platform.

Adding to this congestion, many buses stop outside of the station bringing a large number of commuters.

Staff said passengers already faced waits before the restrictions were introduced.

“People had to wait for two or three trains before getting on in any case, due to the crowds,” a member of station staff said.

“It’s safer to form a queue at the entrance than having everybody stuck on the platform.”

Officials say that they tried other possible solutions, such as having passengers enter and leave by different routes, but the platform was still too crowded.

The station will continue with restrictions on working days, but will adjust the number of entrance gates according to circumstances, said officials.
