River tunnel linking Expo's 2 sides set to open April 20
THE city's only vehicle tunnel linking the Shanghai World Expo site on both sides of the Huangpu River will open on April 20, the builder said yesterday.
The Xizang Road S. Tunnel, located between Lupu Bridge and Nanpu Bridge, will have three ramps inside the Expo site.
It will take four minutes to travel between the two sides at a designed speed of 40 kilometers an hour, said Tian Jin, an engineer with the builder, Shanghai No.2 Municipal Engineering Co Ltd.
Only vehicles authorized to enter the Expo zones will be allowed to use the tunnel during the fair, traffic authorities said. But the tunnel will open to the public after the Expo ends in October.
During the Expo, up to 70,000 people are expected to use the tunnel per hour, traffic authorities said.
The Puxi end of the tunnel will be near Xizang Road S., with one ramp near Bansongyuan Road, where an Expo entrance is set.
Its Pudong end, on Gaoke Road W., will be closed during the Expo, authorities said. Only two ramps inside the Pudong site, both the main entrances of the site, can be accessed: one at Xueye Road and the other at Guozhan Road.
The builder said the tunnel design will ensure the tunnel sees no flooding when there's heavy rain.
The illumination system inside the tunnel will adjust according to the actual light.
The newly built river passage, 2.67 kilometers long, began construction in November 2005.
One tube of the tunnel was temporarily opened to eight bus routes last July to alleviate traffic pressure when Dapu Road Tunnel was closed for traffic for renovation.
