Road bridge over creek demolished
A "structurally unsafe" bridge in downtown Shanghai has been demolished and local motorists and cyclists will have to wait 10 months before a new bridge stands in its place, the project contractor said yesterday.
The Shanghai Urban Construction Group said it is done dismantling the Jiangning Road Bridge spanning Suzhou Creek and is preparing to build a new one at the same site.
Police efforts to ease traffic jams in the area have proven futile as tens of thousands of commuters must detour 4.3 kilometers. The busy section of Jiangning Road between Guangfu Road and Aomen Road will not reopen to traffic until December, the contractor said.
Neighboring Caoyang Road Bridge will also be reinforced after the new Jiangning Road Bridge opens. The construction of a subway station and high-rises is blamed for causing that bridge foundation to subside, prompting the repair project.
