S3 connection brings relief to traffic-snarled area

RELIEF has come for visitors ensnared in traffic jams on their way to or from Shanghai Disney Resort.

The first section of the S3 Expressway was opened yesterday, which will help to alleviate traffic to the resort as well as bringing relief to residents in Zhoupu and Kangqiao of the Pudong New Area traveling to downtown. The 3.1 kilometer elevated section connects the Outer Ring Road and Luoshan Elevated Road at its northern end, and Zhoudeng Highway at the southern end. The section includes a pair of ramps on Zhoudeng Highway

Ramps on Xiupu Road, and roads under the expressway are expected to be connected by June or earlier.

With the new connection, cars heading to Disneyland and other facilities in the Shanghai International Tourism and Resorts Zone will be able to go via the S3 Expressway and Zhoudeng Highway and then into the south entrance of the resorts zone, preventing congestion at the west entrance.

Residents living in Zhoupu and Kangqiao areas, who have suffered severe congestion on roads to the city center, will find it easier to get downtown.

“The expressway will cut my travel time to downtown by 20 percent,” said a local resident surnamed Zhong, who was one of the first drivers to test the new road.

“The S3 will help to alleviate some pressure of the north-south highways,” said Hong Yanfeng, a police officer in the Pudong New Area.
