Safety screens are installed at Line 8's new elevated stations
SAFETY screens have been installed to protect passengers on all elevated stations being built along the extension of Line 8, Metro officials said yesterday.
The second phase of Line 8 will go into service in early July. Final decoration is under way and testing is in full swing.
The four elevated platforms will have arched roofs, which can better absorb noise made by trains, Metro officials said.
The safety screens are 1.5 meters high and are also being introduced at some existing elevated stations.
The Metro authority said five more trains would be added to the current 19 when the Line 8 extension opens.
More than 50,000 residents who have been relocated to three sites on the east side of the Huangpu River to make way for the 2010 World Expo zone will have easier access into downtown areas when Line 8's extension opens.
Residents in Pujiang Town, one of the relocation sites, will be able to get to People's Square in 30 to 45 minutes, instead of almost an hour by bus, said Zhu Limin, an official with the Shanghai Metro Operation Management Center, yesterday.
The new route will have one of its four elevated stations at Pujiang Town. The others are at Jiang°?yue Road, Lianhang Road and the Aerospace Museum. The stop at the museum is the future terminus.
The extension also includes four underground stations - Yangsi Road, Jiyang Road, Lingzhao New Residential Complex and Luheng Road. Yangsi Road Station will be the first stop, as the route extends eastward from its current terminus at Chengshan Road Station in Pudong.
The final stages of the project are now under way while engineers are focusing on testing trains in order to merge the 14.22-kilometer second-phase extension with the line's current route, said officials with the Shentong Metro Group, the local Metro operator.
