Scooter escapee lands in water

AFRAID to be caught, an unlicensed scooter rider sped off and fell over a bridge yesterday afternoon after seeing police patrols on the road, Shanghai police said.

The man surnamed Guo was slightly injured after being pulled from the river and was treated in a nearby hospital.

Yangpu police said the 20-year-old man does not have a driving license and they were surprised by Guo's behavior as none of them were approaching him.

"The officers did not even notice him," said He Xinying, a spokesman for Yangpu police. "Guo suddently accelerated his scooter and then fell off the bridge."

The incident happened yesterday afternoon when Guo was carrying a woman to a meeting on the scooter. Noticing some police were checking vehicles on Guohe Road, Guo turned around and stopped. After the woman got off, Guo suddenly accelerated and fell off the bridge after brushing with a vehicle.

The woman said Guo did not jump off the bridge on purpose but his speed was too fast to stop.
