Security measures upgraded at both city airports over terrorism concerns

PASSENGERS at Shanghai’s two airports have to X-ray their luggage at the entrances of the terminal buildings amid concerns over terrorism.

They are also subjected to an explosive-proof inspection at the entrances of the terminal buildings. Security staff wipes each bag with a test paper before passengers are allowed to enter the building.

They then have to walk through a security check door for a full body check and further inspections, similar to the checks before boarding the flight.

Some passengers are asked to open their luggage for manual inspections if the X-ray shows up anything suspicious. Lighters and other banned materials are being confiscated.

"The additional security check mainly targets banned knives, guns as well as flammable and explosive materials," said Xia Gongwei, security check manager at Pudong airport.

Twenty-seven gates and entrances at the two terminal buildings at Pudong airport have been equipped with the security check machines. Four officers are stationed at each point. Five other gates have become one-way exits.

At Hongqiao airport, 14 security check points have been set up at terminal buildings.

It takes about five minutes to finish the additional inspection but there were long queues stretching to about 10 meters at some entrances.

“Passengers are reminded not to bring flammable or explosive materials, knives and other prohibited objects to the airport,” the Shanghai Airport Authority said.

It also advised passengers to arrive at least 30 minutes earlier to give themselves enough time to get through the latest security measures.

Items banned in both carry-on and checked baggage include corrosive substances, toxic pesticides, and substances emitting a pungent odor.

"The new security check slowed down my schedule, but I think it's necessary for safety as terrorism has become an international concern," said Duncan Granshaw, a business traveler from New Zealand.

In June, a man hurled a bottle containing home-made explosives inside Shanghai’s Pudong International Airport, injuring four people before attempting to kill himself.
