Security raised on Tibet trains

PEOPLE traveling by train to Tibet between now and mid-September will have to undergo tighter security checks as authorities seek to crack down on ticket scalpers, police said yesterday.
An increasing number of people are expected to visit the autonomous region this year as it celebrates its 50th anniversary, railway police said.
The June to September period is traditionally the peak travel season.
Staff at ticket offices have been asked to carefully verify the identities of people buying tickets to Tibet, and to pay particular attention to anyone buying more than one, said railway police officer Zhang Bo.
Tourists should expect closer identity checks at the station, but the process should not delay them for too long, Zhang said, adding that police will conduct more patrols at the station in a bid to identify and apprehend scalpers.
People planning to travel by train to Tibet can buy tickets 60 days in advance. Foreigners, however, are required to get an entry permit from the Tibetan Tourism Bureau, which they can apply for at any licensed travel agency.
Just one train per day runs from Shanghai Railway Station to Tibet.
