Security warning prompts agencies to shelve Philippines tour packages
Travel agencies in Shanghai said today they have stopped sales of tour packages to the Philippines and canceled booked trips following a warning by China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs reminding Chinese not to visit the country.
The ministry said yesterday that Philippines police have recently confirmed there are criminal gangs planning to attack the Chinese embassy, as well as Chinese-funded companies and shops in the country.
Due to the deteriorating security situation, the ministry reminded Chinese citizens not to visit the country and asked Chinese and Chinese institutions there to raise safety awareness. They also asked Chinese to notify the police and the Chinese embassy or consulates for help in event of an emergency.
Shanghai Spring Tour said it stopped tour sales to the Philippines. Nearly 100 people who had paid for trips to the country will be given a full refund, it said.
Travel agencies recommended people choose nearby destinations like Bali, Indonesia, or Phuket in Thailand, and Cambodia.
Shanghai Datong Travel Agency said it has about 10 tourists in the Philippines at beach resorts like Boracay and Cebu. They will return to Shanghai today, the agency said.
The agency also stopped selling tour packages to the Philippines due to safety concerns, adding about 100 who had already booked tours will be provided a full refund.
Last year, more than 81,000 people from Shanghai visited the Philippines in organized tour groups, making it the eighth most popular overseas destination among the city's residents.
