September debut likely for city’s fleet of 'London cabs'

FIFTY "London taxis" will hit Shanghai roads as early as September, the city's traffic authority said today.

The China-made vehicles will have a similar appearance as the iconic black cabs in the British capital, according to operator Shanghai Qiangsheng Taxi Co.

Qiangsheng, the city's largest taxi company, won a recent bid to operate the 200 cabs. The first 50 will appear on city streets around the end of September.

The "London cabs" will be equipped with accessible facilities and mainly serve passengers with special needs. The flag down fare has not been decided but it is expected to be more than 14 yuan (US$2.25), which is charged by downtown taxis.
