Shanghai below-zero spell of weather predicted
A SHARP cold wave, with temperatures dropping below zero, is expected to hit Shanghai from tomorrow afternoon - but a glimmer of good news is that rain is not forecast for the week.
The city's meteorological bureau said yesterday that the mercury would fall by 6 to 8 degrees Celsius from tomorrow through Wednesday.
The temperature early on Wednesday morning will drop to about minus 1 degree in the downtown area, while in some suburban areas it is expected to be 2 to 3 degrees below zero, the bureau said.
"This cold front will have an influence on the city for about four days," said Li Jinyu, a forecaster with the bureau.
"The extreme low temperature may appear on Thursday morning."
The temperature then is expected to drop to about minus 2 degrees downtown, and minus 3 to 5 degrees in the suburbs.
From tomorrow the maximum temperature should be 3 to 4 degrees, with 3 to 9 degrees for today, according to forecasters.
The cold snap is also tipped to bring strong, icy winds with it.
Wind speed in the downtown area will range between 29 and 49 kilometers per hour, and 50 to 74kph at the mouth of the Yangtze River, according to the bureau.
On nearby seas and in the Yangshan Deep-Water Port, gales of up to 88kph are predicted to hit.
Snow in north China has affected Shanghai flights and other traffic to cities like Beijing and Tianjin.
At least 10 flights traveling to Beijing were canceled and 28 delayed yesterday at the city's Pudong International Airport.
Airlines reminded passengers to check schedules well ahead of boarding time in case flights to the north were canceled or delayed.
Shanghai long-distance coach services to Beijing were also canceled yesterday because of snow.
