Shanghai buses ply in Sofia

SHANGHAI’S eco-friendly super capacitor electric buses is making inroads into eastern Europe with some of them plying on the streets of Bulgarian capital Sofia.

The electric buses, manufactured by Shanghai-based Aowei Technology, have long battery life and is capable of completing the entire Route 11 in Sofia without recharging.

Since their introduction in Shanghai in August 2006, the electric buses have chalked up a safe driving record of up to 8 million kilometers to date.

Hua Li, chairman of Aowei Technology, said environment friendly public transportation can help eastern European countries like Bulgaria to meet the stricter emission standard.

Market observers say Shanghai, which started researching and developing the electric buses in 2002, is a decade ahead of Europe in terms of technology as the electric buses made by European companies have to be recharged at every stop which drives up the cost of infrastructure development.
