Shanghai doc comes to rescue

AN American passenger who suffered from heart problems on a flight from Shanghai to the US was given emergency assistance by a Shanghai doctor who was on the same plane.

The 70-year-old American heart patient, whose name was not given, was on flight UA836 from Shanghai to Chicago on Thursday. Four hours after the flight took off, he started to sweat and complained of discomfort in his chest.

The passenger told the crew that he had received treatment for atrial fibrillation, a type of arrhythmia, about a year ago.

The crew sought help through the aircraft’s broadcast system and was immediately approached by Dr Ge Junbo, chief physician of Zhongshan Hospital’s cardiac division and an academic at the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Ge, who was on his way to a medical conference in the US, put an oxygen mask on the the man’s face and dilated his blood vessels with glyceryl nitrate medicine.

He then asked the crew to move the patient to business class so that he could lie down in order to improve his blood circulation.

The patient made a slow recovery and was soon in stable condition, enabling the flight to head to its destination without having to make an emergency stopover.

The patient arrived in Chicago 10 hours later, during which Dr Ge attended him every two to three hours to check his condition.

“It was so nice to have him on the plane,” the crew members said later. “We really appreciate it. It’s awesome.”
