Shanghai gears up for heavy rains
HEAVY rains, thunder and gales are expected to hit the city this morning, the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau warned yesterday.
The stormy weather will last through the night and push the high down to 31 degrees Celsius.
Chongming Island was inundated with rains of up to 46 millimeters per hour and strong gusts yesterday afternoon during a thunderstorm brought by convective weather conditions.
Chongming upgraded its yellow rainstorm alert to orange at 3:43pm in expectation of rainfall of up to 50 millimeters.
Chongming, Jinshan and Jiading districts also saw some thundershowers, but most of the city remained dry and cloudy.
Storms will hit the city today, bringing rainfall of between 20mm and 40mm. Some areas can expect rainfall of 60-80mm.
The mercury is expected to bounce back to 33 degrees tomorrow, and the remainder of the week will be cloudy with occasional showers or thundershowers.
