Shanghai police work out security arrangements ahead of Spring Festival
SHANGHAI’S entire police force will be on duty on the last two days before the Spring Festival.
Bai Shaokang, head of Shanghai Public Security Bureau, said the security measures are being taken to prevent terrorist attacks.
“Safety of the city throughout the holiday, implementing the firework and firecracker ban and ensuring the safety of CCTV New Year’s Gala’s Shanghai live stage, are of extreme importance to us,” he said.
The CCTV stage for the live show on the Chinese New Year’s Eve will be set up at the foot of the Oriental Pearl Tower.
Police will also send officers to patrol and safeguard popular tourist spots such as the Bund, Lujiazui along the Huangpu River and Yuyuan Garden as well as shopping centers and Buddhist and Taoist temples.
There will be about 120 events at the temples, including Longhua Temple, the Jade Buddha Temple and Jin’an Temple, and 38 large events at the city’s exhibition, performance and shopping centers from the New Year to the Lantern Festival. Police said that they had taken safety measures to best prevent terrorist attacks, stampedes and fire.
Police will also join hands with security enforcers from the tourism bureau to crack down on illegal tour guides and fraudsters who take tourists to expensive teahouses and restaurants.
About 300,000 community volunteers around the city will work with the police during the holiday to look out for people who illegally light fireworks and firecrackers within the Outer Ring Road.
The same security measures will be applied on the fourth day of the Chinese New Year when people traditionally celebrate the coming of the God of Wealth the next day.
