Shanghai pulls in over 9m tourists
THE weeklong National Day holiday brought 9.27 million tourists to Shanghai, up 5 percent from last year, the Shanghai Tourism Administration said yesterday.
This year’s holiday brought the city 9.1 billion yuan (US$1.36 billion) of travel revenue, 13.2 percent up on the 2015 holiday.
More than 2.6 million tourists arrived in the city by train and 576,000 by bus for the holiday, both 10.8 percent higher than last year. The number of people arriving by air rose 2.6 percent to over 1 million, with travelers coming by ship reaching 11,000, up 9.9 percent.
The expressways were used by 1.98 million cars coming into the city and 2.18 million outbound from September 30 to October 6, increases of 7 and 8 percent respectively.
The average occupancy rate at local hotels was 62 percent during the holiday, seven percentage points higher than last year.
Authorities attributed the increase of tourists to the multiple choices of tourism products Shanghai provided during the holiday, which also coincided with the end of the 27-day-long tourism festival that began on September 10, featuring both special events and ticket discounts at many tourism sites.
The lure of Shanghai Disney Resort, which opened on June 16, also boosted tourism industry development, said the tourism administration, without giving details.
The 165 parks in the city received nearly 5.6 million visitors over the holiday, up 15.44 percent from last year, while visitors to the 140 tourism scenic spots topped 6.5 million — a 12 percent growth.
Suburbs and ancient towns were popular choices this year. The music festival at Zhujiajiao Water Town in Qingpu District, the Qipao cultural festival in Songjiang District, and the cultural exhibition of steamed buns in Jiading District all attracted huge crowds.
Zhujiajiao Water Town pulled in 267,000 visitors during the week, a soaring 72 percent rise from last year, and the highest rate of increase among the 18 scenic spots monitored during the holiday week.
Jinjiang Amusement Park in Minhang District received 58,800 visitors, up 20 percent, Madame Tussaud’s waxworks museum attracted 44,400 visitors, a 12.3 percent increase, and Shanghai Science and Technology Museum served 154,000 visitors, up 10 percent.
Some other sites, however, had fewer visitors. The Shanghai Oriental Pearl TV Tower had 161,000 visitors during the holiday, down 7.5 percent. Visitors to Shanghai Wild Animal Park fell 9 percent to 190,900, and 90,000 people visited Shanghai Happy Valley, a decline of 22 percent.
Overseas travel also proved popular. The two airports in Shanghai reported 394,000 people travelling outbound, up 11.1 percent.
Authorities received a total of 42 tourism related complaints that were considered valid during the week, down 28.8 percent on last year’s National Day holiday.
Meanwhile, the city’s retail sales rose 8.4 percent during the holiday, slightly faster than last year’s pace of 8.1 percent, the Shanghai Commission of Commerce said yesterday.
The growth was led by large shopping malls and wet markets, which reported double-digit increases, while department stores and supermarkets said their sales had suffered a modest decrease.
The Shanghai Shopping Festival, which is still running, also contributed to the sales growth, the commission said.
