Shanghai rains put dampener on holiday

THE wet weather led to a dip in visitors at many of Shanghai’s tourist attractions over the Dragon Boat Festival holiday, officials said yesterday.

The number of tourists between Saturday and yesterday at Fengjing water town in Jinshan District fell 12 percent from last year to 47,800, despite the wide range of events on offer, said the Shanghai Tourism Administration.

The story was the same at Oriental Land in Qingpu District, where the number of visitors fell 25 percent to 16,300, and at Century Park in the Pudong New Area — down 16 percent at 28,400 — the administration said.

At Jinjiang Amusement Park in Minhang District, admissions fell 18.5 percent to 16,300, while visitors to Shanghai Wildlife Park in Pudong dropped 23 percent to 43,500. At Shanghai Zoo in Changning District the number fell 25 percent to 39,400, the administration said.

At the Shanghai Science and Technology Museum, visitors fell 39 percent to 39,600, while at the Moon Boat, numbers were down 25 percent at 3,300.

Meanwhile, the number of cars entering the city fell 40 percent from last month’s Labor Day holiday to about 700,000, Shanghai TV reported.
