Shanghai sets all-time record high of 40.6 degrees
THE city recorded its highest official downtown temperature in history today.
Shanghai's downtown benchmark weather reporting station in Xujiahui recorded a historical record 40.6 degrees Celsius, the highest in the 141 years the station has been used for temperature monitoring for Shanghai.
The second consecutive red high-temperature alert was issued at noon, indicating that the mercury would probably top 40 degrees during the day in many downtown places. The red alert is the highest in the three-color warning system.
Outlying districts and counties' high temperatures stayed around 38 degrees, however, forecasters said.
Thunderstorms are expected to hit city's Pudong New Area later in the afternoon, said the weather bureau.
