Shanghai to have 300km of bus-only lanes

SHANGHAI will have over 300 kilometers of bus-only lanes across the city by the end of this year to improve the efficiency of public transportation.

Some 140 kilometers of new lanes will be marked by the end of the year for use by public buses during rush hours between 7am and 9am and 4pm and 7pm. The city already has some 160 kilometers of bus-only lanes now.

Another 200 kilometers of bus lanes are being worked out, Sun Jianping, the head of the city’s transportation commission told the city’s legislative body.

Many of the new bus-only lanes will come up in new townships in the far-off districts, Sun said.

“We are trying to control the utilization of private vehicle and spare the resources for public buses,” Sun said. The bus lanes will be off-limits to other vehicles during morning and afternoon rush hours to ensure smooth and efficient operation of the bus services.

Downtown residents own over 2.1 million vehicles now, compared to the 2.5 million ceiling analyzed by the commission, Sun said.

Furthermore, some of the two-way roads will become one way to spare enough space for the bus-only lanes, said Huang Rong, deputy secretary general of the city government, who was present at the same meeting.
