Shanghai's first tram service for 30 years

TRAMS are to return to the city after a 30-year absence, government officials in Pudong New Area said yesterday.

Officials said construction of a tram line in the Zhang jiang High-Tech Park in Pudong is nearly finished and the service will begin trials in May or June.

The 10-kilometer tram route will link Zhangjiang High-Tech Park Metro Station on Line 2 to Jinqiu Road in the Zhangjiang Semiconductor Industry Park.

There will be 15 stops along the route to service office buildings, research institutes, universities and residential areas. The service will run daily from 6am to 9pm and each tram will be able to carry 167 passengers.

The first-phase budget for the line's construction was 600 million yuan (US$87.79 million). There are plans to extend the service into the Zhangjiang area.
