Shower, thunderstorm expected tonight, mercury to drop Saturday

THE mercury rose to the highest of 36.1 degrees Celsius in downtown Shanghai this afternoon to make today the hottest day this year, the weather forecasters said.

The Shanghai Meteorological Bureau issued a yellow alert, the third of the four-tier alert system, for the sizzling temperature at 11:37am. Most of the city’s downtown areas and Songjiang District saw the mercury rise to above 35 degrees, while the Xujiahui weather station recorded the highest 36.1 degrees.

Due to the impact of a subtropical high, the city’s temperature rose quickly and residents can feel hot and stuffy under a high humidity, the bureau said.

It issued another yellow alert for thunder and lightning weather at 2:10pm and predicated shower and thunderstorm tonight in most part of the city. The rainfall can be 40 millimeters per hour in some areas with thunder and gale, the forecasters said.

The temperature is expected to drop a bit to the high of 25 to 30 degrees on Saturday with some showers. It will turn to be cloudy weather on Sunday and Monday. Rainfall will return to the city from Tuesday.

The plum rain belt is still lingering over the city to bring frequent rainfalls recently, the bureau said.

The city’s air quality remains to be good today and through the weekend, though PM2.5 is still the major pollutants to the city, according to the city’s air quality watchdog.
