Showers, subway fault pile pressure on exam-takers

PEOPLE had to battle through the rain and deal with a temporary suspension of services on Metro Line 8 to get to their college entrance exams yesterday.

The Shanghai Meteorological Bureau issued a blue-level rain alert on Sunday night and the warning remained in place until 10am yesterday.

The highest rainfall — of 25.2 millimeters — was recorded in Fengxian District, followed by 20.6mm in Jinshan District.

The city’s usual traffic congestion was worsened by the rain, while a fault on the subway at Middle Yanji Road station at 6:48am added to people’s woes. The problem was resolved in 40 minutes, but some services were delayed by up to 26 minutes.

Qi Chen, a traffic officer with Yangpu Police, said he saw a large crowd of people milling around outside Metro Line 8’s Shiguang Road station, several of whom pleaded with him to give them a lift to their exams.

Qi declined, but flagged down five taxis and managed to convince their passengers to give up their cabs to the anxious youngsters.

Qi later met a girl on Nengjiang Road who had also been affected by the Metro problem, and despite his earlier no-free-ride policy, on this occasion whisked her to the exam center.

Yangpu police claimed they transported 14 exam-takers in this way, including one who had first to be driven home to collect the identity card she’d earlier forgotten.

Similarly, a police officer in Huangpu District said he drove an exam invigilator to his test center after he had was delayed by the subway problem.

By yesterday afternoon, most of the rain had fizzled out, but the wet conditions are set to remain through tomorrow.
