Sky’s the limit for city charity
The city’s largest annual charity event raised more than 600,000 yuan (US$96,774) in street collections yesterday to help needy households enjoy the Chinese New Year.
The precise total raised in the True Love Under the Blue Sky street collection was 600,454 yuan — 43,205 yuan more than last year.
Meanwhile, companies donated items and cash with a value of 32.5 million yuan in Huangpu District yesterday morning.
Despite the chilly weather, volunteers hit the streets and residential communities across the city collecting donations as the climax of the 20th True Love Under the Blue Sky event, organized by the Shanghai Charity Foundation.
The fundraising event has been running since December 12 and yesterday’s event attracted some 10,000 donors.
“I want to help those who need our care and wish them all the best,” said 12-year-old Li Mengying, who donated 20 yuan at Yangshupu Road in Yangpu District.
Donations go to programs which help poor families seniors, orphans and other people in need.
