Snow, sleet to return tonight with cold front

SNOW is forecast to return overnight as a strong cold front pushes into the city starting today, meteorologists said.
The Shanghai Meteorological Bureau issued a cold alert yesterday evening, warning that temperatures are expected to drop by 7 or 8 degrees Celsius from yesterday as the cold sweeps the East China region. It should feel colder as windy conditions are forecast today and tomorrow.
Today's temperatures should range from 3 to 8 degrees Celsius with rain forecast to turn into sleet and snow around midnight. The temperature is expected to reach freezing tomorrow morning in downtown and go even lower, to minus 2 degrees Celsius, in the suburbs.
Snow should be heavier tomorrow in the western and northern parts of the city, officials said.
"The rain and snow could reach 15 to 25 millimeters from February 18 to 19," said Kong Chunyan, a chief service officer of the bureau. "Due to the low temperature, the snow could accumulate and ice is expected on the road."
Tomorrow is forecast to be overcast to cloudy with a high of 3 degrees.
Rain and sleet could reoccur on Wednesday but much lighter, with the low forecast to be 0 degrees and the high 6 degrees Celsius, the bureau said.
The cold should not last long as the temperature is forecast to rise a little on Thursday with a high of 7 degrees and the weather should be cloudy on Friday, the bureau said.
Shanghai's air quality started to decline last night with the PM2.5 index climbing from about 40 micrograms per cubic meter during the daytime to above 100 by 11:00pm yesterday.
