Soggy start to tomb-sweeping festival

THE three-day Qingming Festival holiday is expected to get off to a soggy start but the showers will taper off as the mercury falls below 20 degrees Celsius when a cold front rolls in tomorrow, forecasters said.

The showers or thundershowers will persist until tonight and could continue through tomorrow morning, and some areas are likely to see heavy downpours.

The cloudy weather will continue into Monday with the high increasing a bit to 18 degrees.

On Tuesday and Wednesday, the rain will return with the mercury fluctuating between 11 and 19 degrees.

Shanghai woke up yesterday morning to a dense fog caused by high humidity and a yellow heavy fog alert issued on Thursday night was upgraded to orange by the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau at 4:28am, forecasting a visibility of less than 200 meters within 6 hours. The visibility was soon cut to below 300 meters at 6am, affecting local traffic and flights.

Due to the thick fog, starting at 6am, most of the city’s expressways had a speed limit of 60 to 80 kilometers per hour. Two entrances of expressway S36 and part of expressways G60 and G2 were closed, and traffic congestion was a problem on G2 and G15.
