Songjiang bridge closed after being hit by vessel

A BRIDGE in Songjiang District was found to be in danger of collapse this morning since its surface was found to be sloping, Songjiang police said.

The Xietang Bridge on the Songzheng Highway was shut down after authorities said the sloping on the bridge is suspected to be caused by a strike from a vessel last night. Police and other authorities of maritime affairs and the road administration are investigating.

Traffic police cordoned off the bridge, requiring passengers and vehicles take a detour, though some drivers still argued that they should be allowed to cross despite the risk.

One of the detours for east-west traffic is the Guangan Road tunnel, officials said.
