Songjiang water loss blamed on lax staff
The shutdown of a pumping station earlier this month that left 350,000 families without running water was blamed yesterday on the carelessness of workers.
Songjiang District was left without water on January 14 when a leak shut down six pumps at the Songjiang No. 2 Water Plant. An investigation by the district government found workers at the factory had failed to patrol the facility on the night of the 13th, which meant they didn't detect the leak in time to stop it from doing major damage.
"The Shanghai Haichao Construction Team, which was in charge of the pump installation in 1995, left a wrench in one of the valves," said Zhang Meng, deputy director of the district. "This meant the valve couldn't close properly."
The director and deputy director of the water plant were sacked, and other officials responsible were also punished.
