Specialist diagnostic unit set up
SHANGHAI Children’s Medical Center has opened the city’s first rare disease diagnosis and treatment center.
There are about 7,000 known rare diseases, and the hospital says the new center will play a key role in identifying and treating patients suffering from them.
“About 80 percent of parents with a child suffering from rare disease want to have a second child, so our information on the genetic cause of the disease can ensure they have a healthy child through prenatal screening,” said the hospital’s Dr Wang Jian in advance of World Rare Disease Day, which falls each year on the last day of February.
“Early identification of rare diseases provides important guidance for clinical treatment.”
The hospital has set up special wards that will be served by a new diagnostic database.
