Speed limiters for city trucks

SHANGHAI’S greenery authority is making speed limiters compulsory on construction waste trucks entering service.

And cameras are to be installed to counter a blind spot when vehicles are turning.

Installed on truck engines, from October 1 these will limit their speed to below 60 kilometers per hour.

Speed data will be automatically transmitted to the authorities’ database, said the Shanghai Greenery and Public Sanitation Bureau.

Speeding is a major cause of road accidents involving trucks in the city, said officials.

Cameras will be compulsory on the right side of truck from October to compensate for a blind spot, said Tian Yinchun, an official with the bureau.

There will also be an alarm system that sounds when the truck is making a right turn.

Currently, many accidents involving trucks and pedestrians, cyclists or scooter riders occur on the right side of trucks due to visibility problems, said police.

Moreover, when a truck turns right, alignment issues mean that it can catch a pedestrian or rider with its back wheel, even if its front wheel has passed safely.

Trucks already in operation will be exempt from installing the new systems, but will require an update if they break regulations, said officials.

“These new systems are aimed at stopping pedestrians, bikes and scooters from ending up under the wheels of the trucks,” said Tian.

Shanghai has about 4,000 trucks registered to carry construction waste.
